Emmett Carson on Cuts to Charitable Deductions

“Yes, today’s charitable tax deduction has a cost … but limiting the value of the deduction, capping [it] or limiting it entirely carries an even greater cost.”

Emmett Carson, CEO of our partner organization Silicon Valley Community Foundation, wrote a special op-ed last week for the Silicon Valley Mercury News about possible cuts to the charitable deductions Americans will be allowed to take each year. As head of the second largest community foundation in the U.S., Mr. Carson is perhaps one of the best to comment on the great work achieved by the non-profit sector (and the donations that fund them). “With the magnitude of the challenges we face, we need more people to give — not fewer,” he writes. We couldn’t agree more.
